Adel Abidin: Addition

Mixed media wall installation

Since the year 632, and the death of the Prophet Muhammad, Shia Muslims have claimed Imam Ali was his rightful successor. That has put them at deadly odds with the (90% majority) of Sunni Muslims, who regard themselves as “orthodox” and their (chiefly Arabic) brothers as heretics. This murderous infighting has weakened the entire religion.

A few small tweaks to the familiar Saudi flag, could bring the millennial-long conflict to an end: removing the text, flipping the sword to point left instead of right and adding another illuminated point to the sword.

"Addition!" is an ironic commentary on the malleability, intransigence, the profundity and shallowness of symbols.
