Alyaa
Two channel video installation
The installation negotiates a complex relationship between inside and outside. It is a memorial to a girl, Alyaa, who is lost in a cultural conflict between modern life and old-fashioned traditions. Her conservative parents forced her into an early marriage to save and protect her from the outside world, but in the end, she was locked inside a overwhelming commitment she was not ready to experience, but not able to escape.
The work consists of two video projections: one in the room and the other to be viewed through a security peep hole in the wall. The first projection confronts the viewer entering the space, as an opaque window concealing the silhouette of a woman hidden behind the wall. She is constantly scratching the paint off the glass with a razor, trying to steal a view of the outside world. Through the security viewer, the second video features a naked woman pacing, panicking, and thrashing inside a sealed metal box.
